WHO would have thought spaghetti vongole and gelato would rank at No.1 on Michelle Bridges' favourite food experiences while travelling.

The exercise guru says the trick to staying on the mostly straight and narrow is to treat yourself to a special meal every day but keep other meals light. And give the buffet breakfast a wide berth.

Favourite place in Australia?

MB: There are too many places to choose from but if I had to give you three I would say Byron Bay for a beach holiday, the NSW Southern Highlands if I want a country escape and the magic of the Whitsundays.

Overseas?

MB: Italy.

Why?

MB: The food, the wine and the men.

Favourite place to visit as part of work?

MB: I loved going to Hawaii, we went there one year with The Biggest Loser and it was awesome. It had such a great retro feel, so old school, especially on the northern part of the main island. I felt like I was walking about on the set of Flipper.

How many holidays do you get to take a year?

MB: I try to take at least two - one main holiday and one smaller one. This year, I'd like to try to fit in a few more weekends away.

Do you collect souvenirs?

MB: Sometimes I do. The year before last, when I went to the Amalfi Coast, I bought an amazing dinner set that was in lots of bright vibrant colours. I got them to ship it home for me, it is so pretty and always gets commented on when I have guests over.

Best thing you've eaten on holiday?

MB: It has to be the spaghetti vongole I tried in Rome and the gelato I ate in Milan.

Has anything ever gone wrong?

MB: Yes, everything at one point or another. I've lost passports, missed flights and had luggage go missing. When I was in France I had my whole knapsack stolen from the back of a car.

Tips for staying on track with food and exercise while on holiday?

MB: Choose one meal in the day where you enjoy yourself and maybe have a glass of wine, make the others very small and light. My main rule is to avoid the buffet breakfast. If I have to, I'll have breakfast delivered to my room.

Where to next?

MB: Possibly Croatia but I haven't booked anywhere yet.

Top of your travel list?

MB: There are a few places, maybe the Bahamas or the Caribbean. I would love to see more of the Greek Islands and I have always dreamt of going to Alaska and staying in a remote cabin.

Is there anything you can't travel without?

MB: My runners.

What has travel taught you?

MB: Independence.

The Biggest Loser: The Next Generation is on at 7.30pm Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, on Network Ten.
