RICHARD Branson's carefree attitude to safety led to a run-in with the law in Adelaide.

The 63-year-old billionaire was so busy soaking up Adelaide's extraordinary autumn heat that he neglected to strap on a bike helmet.

He is the second Brit to fall foul of our laws, four months after actor Robert Pattinson was cautioned for the same offence.

It is not mandatory in Britain for cyclists to wear a helmet while riding.

Sir Richard was in town to speak at an event organised by a women's networking group and to show his support for a mentoring program that helps Aboriginal students succeed at school.

When he headed out of the Hilton Hotel in Victoria Square for a ride, he was soon stopped by two police officers.

A police spokesman said Sir Richard's management told officers that he had just started riding and had a helmet with him.

Earlier this year, British Twilight star Rob Pattinson was snapped riding along the River Torrens without a helmet.

He was in SA shooting scenes for his film The Rover.
