HE may be a woolly mammoth but even a tough merino like Rambo needs to keep warm.

The Goulburn branch of the NSW Knitters Guild has stitched up a storm and made a giant scarf for the Big Merino to mark the town's 150th anniversary.

More than 100 people helped create the 30m, 30kg scarf, in a nine-month operation using 71km of yarn. The knitting group's spokeswoman, Susan McDonnell, said they wanted to create something that would promote the town to the world.

"You walk down the street and it's on everyone's lips, people even know about it overseas," Ms McDonnell said.
