FRIGID Tassie reef giants and toasty but tiny Queensland point breaks. From up-and-coming professional riders to the most famous pro of all time, so well-known even the back of his bald head is identifiable - the finalists in Surfing Australia's annual photo competition cover the many moods of modern surfing.

The Nikon Surf Photo of the Year competition features the best Australian surf photography of the past 12 months and will be decided at a gala dinner in Sydney next week.

Among the finalists are Andrew Chisholm's image of Marti Paradisis moments before the wipeout of a lifetime at Eddystone Rock off Tasmania and Billy Morris's frame of rising star Ryan Hipwood dropping into a golden bomb at The Bommie off South Australia.

But surfing isn't all about big waves and bravado. Dane Peterson shot a classic small, point-break wave, complete with bushfire in the background. And that hairless noggin? It's Kelly Slater of course.
