BRUCE "Hoppo" Hopkins has lived in Sydney's eastern suburbs for 43 years. A recent move to Thirroul on the NSW south coast is just what Hoppo and partner Tracey have been looking for - no traffic and plenty of waves off Sandon Point.
From Hamilton Island to Hawaii, even when he's not working, Bondi's head lifeguard gravitates to the beach.
Where is your favourite place for a holiday in Australia?
BH: Hamilton Island. It's such a relaxing, beautiful place. My job can be stressful, so if I ever want to get away to relax, Hamilton Island is the place.
Overseas?
BH: Hawaii. The people are lovely, the surf is amazing, the history and scenery incredible.
How many holidays do you get to take a year?
BH: While our summer roster is running I can't take time off. Generally between May and September I have more flexibility.
Where's your favourite beach outside of Australia?BH: Waimea beach, Hawaii. It has some of the best waves in the world.
Has anything gone wrong while travelling?
BH: Yes (laughs). I was going through security at Copenhagen airport when I was taken into a room and searched. They suspected I had a knife and I was nearly arrested. I actually had gold medals I'd won from the World Surf Lifesaving Titles. It's funny when I look back, but I was worried at the time.
Where will your next holiday be?
BH: The next overseas trip will either be America or back to Europe. I still have so many more places to visit over there. India maybe an option late next year. I'm also going to go back to Perth for the Annual Rottnest Swim - I love the beaches in Perth.
Top of your travel list?
BH: Spain. I'm itching to get over there. I hear it's an amazing place. I really want to experience their culture. They also have a lifeguard service over there that I'd love to check out.
What has travel taught you?
BH: To never stop discovering and learning.
Is there anything you can't travel without?
BH: My partner - she keeps me in line. She would say I can't travel without checking my luggage 20 times before leaving the house. I always feel I've forgotten something.
Hoppo is on Bondi Rescue on the Ten Network.
